The IH ‘26 Early Career Workshop is an event for early career researchers, up to 5 years post-PhD, to explore together their professional activities and goals, to learn from one another, and to discuss topics most important to the participants. Participants will also have opportunities to strengthen their professional networks with one another, and with the senior IH mentors. It will consist of a physical event taking place in Porto before the on-site conference. The primary goal of the Workshop is to provide a forum for in-depth discussions and to build a mentoring and peer network for participants.
Unlike the Doctoral Consortia, we will focus on professional and career challenges, and not on the contents of research programs per se. We are particularly interested in topics unique to careers at the intersection of health and technology, examples may include:
All submissions will remain confidential (not published), but will be shared with other ECW participants.
Each proposal should be a single PDF with three components: (1) a three-page description (see below), (2) an expected benefits statement, (3) a curriculum vitae.
To be considered, you must submit your Early Career Workshop proposal by the submission deadline.
1. A single-authored document (maximum of 3 pages) in ACM Master Article Submission Templates format describing:
2. Benefits and Contribution statement
3. Curriculum Vitae:
Please ensure that your submission is complete and conforms to the format and content guidelines above. Because the Early Career Workshop chairs expect to receive many applications, submissions that do not meet these requirements will be desk rejected.
Authors are strongly encouraged to work on improving the accessibility of their submissions, using recommendations found in the SIGCHI Guide to an Accessible Submission for their paper. For any questions or concerns about creating accessible submissions, please contact the Accessibility Chairs at accessibility2026@ih.acm.org.
Overview: As soon as the submission deadline passes, the Early Career Workshop committee will review and select candidates with the goal of identifying a set of early career researchers who will benefit significantly from the event and support each other. We will seek diversity in backgrounds, identities, abilities, intellectual viewpoints, topics, and geographic areas.
Supporting a wide group of institutions: Besides the selection criteria above, kindly note that even if your submission is excellent, we might not be able to accept you because of our goals of having attendees across many institutions.
The participant will receive information about registration and attending the conference.
They will also receive further information from the chairs on any prework that should be completed before the workshop.
For specific template instructions for the publication ready version of your submissions, see the Publication Formats page.
The author of each accepted submission will be present at the physical Early Career Workshop event in Porto. The in-person event will take place Sunday in Porto on July 5, 2026.
The format will be highly interactive. Participants may also be asked to do some pre-workshop reflections (~30-60 mins). Instructions for this will be sent at least two weeks prior to the event.
Individuals accepted to the Early Career Workshop are expected to attend the workshop in full.
