visa information

Last update: Feb 27, 2026

Portugal is part of the Schengen Area. Whether a visa is required to attend the conference depends on the participant’s nationality, length of stay, and purpose of travel.

Participants who are nationals of the European Union/European Economic Area or Switzerland, as well as citizens of Schengen visa-exempt countries (such as the United States of America, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Japan, and others), do not need a visa for short stays of up to 90 days in each 180-day period, provided no paid work is carried out in Portugal.

Participants whose nationality requires a visa (listed below) must apply for a Short-Stay Schengen Visa (Type C - short stays or tourism). This visa covers participation in scientific, academic, cultural and professional conferences, including oral or poster presentations and invited talks, for stays up to 90 days.

Visa applications must be submitted in the applicant’s country of residence through the Portuguese Embassy or Consulate with jurisdiction over that country, or through an official visa application centre (such as VFS Global), where available. In countries where Portugal is not represented, another Schengen Member State may process visa applications on Portugal’s behalf. All visa decisions are taken by Portuguese consular authorities.

In any case, please make sure that your passport has at least six months' validity on your arrival date in the country.
